Trepanning is a surgical practice in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the human skull to treat intracranial disease or disorder. Dr. Luther Bates used the practice on Rebecca Foster when he was treating her at the Toronto East Asylum. He later wrote a treatise on the subject entitled "A History of the Practice of Trepanning the Skull and After-Treatment" ("The Blood Code").
