• Herbert makes his appearance at the dinner honouring Helen Keller as one of the organisers. After the murder takes place, he's interviewed with his fiancée Ruth Newsome by Henry Higgins, where Ruth mentions her engagement to Herbert.
• However, Henry believes the engagement isn't for love, and does some digging into Herbert, where he reveals that Herbert has lost all of his money. Once everyone is back at the dinner table, Detective Murdoch exposes Herbert as the killer, mentioning how he lost all of his money investing in a machine that allows the dead to talk.
• Herbert then destroys the Edison Recorder, and tries to flee, but Helen tackles him to the ground.
• After he confesses that he killed David Thornton, he tells Ruth that he hates roses, and would never marry someone as 'boring and vacuous' as her, resulting in himself being punched by Henry.
