Alexandre Lacassagne was a French physician and criminologist. He was the first to develop Ballistic Fingerprinting; a method by which bullets from the same gun could be matched by the striations appearing on them.

During his investigation into the murder of Ida Winston, Detective William Murdoch used the Ballistic Fingerprinting technique ("Elementary, My Dear Murdoch").
